The Forest of Dean is an excellent location for cyclists, providing varied terrain, scenery and a variety of off-road paths. Cycling holidays are immensely popular here with people travelling from all over the country just to cycle in the Forest. With an extensive network of cycle paths, many off-road, it is perfect for cyclists of all abilities. Road riders can look forward to winding country lanes and short hill climbs. Families can use the popular cycle paths in the Cannop Valley safely away from traffic, and for keen mountain bikers the downhill Forest tracks provide wild opportunities with an excellent dedicated off-road area.
Bike hire is available in our village, Parkend, from Dean Forest Cycles. They also offer guided cycle tours of the Forest, and you can even hire electric bikes for those less exercise-inclined!
There is a well surfaced cycle trail located right behind Edale House B&B. We also have secure bike storage and wash facilities for bicycles and a CYTECH cycle mechanic on site. Our new cycle wash area was completed recently and has full drainage, with its own dedicated retractable hose, bike clamp, AstroTurf around the sides and bike storage next door with stress matting. There is gated side access from the car park in front of the house. Please inform us before arrival if you will be bringing your own bikes. From 2018 we also plan to have a few bikes to hire ourselves.
We are also less than three miles from the excellent Cannop Cycle Centre. Here you can rent a bike from Pedalabikeaway and access a huge range of cycling trails for all ages and skills including safe off-road trails for children and advanced mountain bike trails. Maps are available although the most popular paths are very well signposted.
The Forest of Dean is a perfect destination for those looking for a cycling holiday. Short term visitors often regret that they did not stay longer to take advantage of all that is available!
The Tour of Britain
The annual Tour of Britain often comes directly through the Forest of Dean. Taking place in September every year, the Tour of Britain is British Cycling’s premier road cycling event and the country’s largest, annual, free-to-spectate sporting event. In 2017 it is circling around the Forest unfortunately, but there are still plenty of locations within a short drive where you can see them whizz past!
